April 19, 1943 — the date Albert Hofmann, having synthesized LSD five years earlier at Sandoz without noting any effect, deliberately dosed himself with 0.25mg, then rode his bicycle home through Basel as the effects took hold. Widely marked as the first intentional LSD trip in history, and celebrated informally as a psychedelic holiday every year on the anniversary.

Example: Hofmann later described becoming convinced his next-door neighbor was a malevolent witch and that the LSD had poisoned him — a real, documented account of how disorienting an unplanned, unsupervised first dose can be, even for the chemist who invented the compound.
