DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration)

Regulatory

The federal agency responsible for scheduling controlled substances and enforcing drug law — the agency that would have to reschedule psilocybin, MDMA, or LSD out of Schedule I before any approved drug based on them could actually be prescribed.

Example: In its January 2026 final production quota order, the DEA raised the legal research-production cap for psilocybin from 30,000 to 50,000 grams and for 5-MeO-DMT from 11,000 to 30,000 grams — a real, measurable signal of how much more supply the agency is greenlighting for study, short of actually rescheduling anything.
