MAOI (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor)

Pharmacology

Enzyme inhibitor that prevents breakdown of DMT in the gut, enabling oral psychoactive activity in ayahuasca.

Example: This is also why MAOIs come with a real dietary restriction outside of psychedelics — combined with tyramine-rich foods (aged cheese, cured meats), they can trigger a genuine hypertensive crisis, not just a bad trip. The same MAO enzymes are involved in breaking down 2C-B, which is one reason combining the two carries real risk rather than just folklore.
